Description:
|
This song was recorded by Pat Pickard to provide insight into 'old-fashioned Pentecost.'
Pat provides some background for the song--when and why it was written: 'Brother Raymond Priest wrote this song about 1945. This was the same year that the UPC was formed, and he became associated with this group. As far as I can determine, the revival that he speaks about in the song occurred during the 1930s after men had gone out from the Davis sisters' church into New Brunswick and lit revival fires. It would have been the meetings that they held in Newcastle Bridge with Sam Steeves, and the years that Campbell Dudley was active in the Miramichi area as well as many other young men that went out in ministry from the Davis Sisters' church. I would say that when it speaks of 'down the river they further went, holding meetings in a tent,' it meant that they went further down the river from Newcastle Bridge. These were the years, also, when Brother Clifford Crabtree was out in evangelistic ministry under the Davis sisters. He is the one that taught that song to us at Pentecostal Mission in Bangor sometime after 1945. It was so relevant to him because he lived it! He learned that song at the Davis Sisters' church.
